Enthronement of the Bible

We long for God, to live in a relationship, to know and to be known. When we cannot gather as the Body of Christ to receive the Body of Christ in the Eucharist, the Living Word is one of the most readily available ways to be with Jesus. A Bible serves as a reminder that God is always with us, even for a pre-literate child. This Parent Page can help you nurture your child’s relationship with the Holy Scripture.

Help Me Do It By Myself!

A pre-school child will let anyone know that they are not a “baby”! Striving for independence, the child wants to do for themselves many of the tasks that have been done for them by adults. Yet many children are sensitive to failure; tears and tantrums can follow missteps. How can we prepare our children to successfully care for themselves and their environment without our direct intervention?

In the Atrium, “practical” lessons build gradually building skills slowly so that the child is prepared for more and more complicated work. And I have observed that over time, simple repetitive practical tasks can help a child to settle into deep flow or spontaneous focus, which is the beginning of personal prayer. This “Parent Page” gives ideas of prayerful practical work for your child to do at home.

Let’s Pray Together

What if your child said this to you? How would you feel? Excited? Uncertain?

Even if your pre-school child does not have the words to ask for prayer time, he or she has a spiritual need to connect with the God of all creation, the God who loves each one of us before we can name that love or speak our gratitude.

Let’s pray together! Let’s make it a normal part of our day like story time or meal time.

Creating a Prayer Space at Home

Setting a Prayer Table

Make a beautiful space for quiet personal prayer and joyful family gathering, and you may find more peace and gratitude amid difficulties.

If your child has been in the atrium, chances are he or she knows how to prepare a prayer table.  Here are some quick tips:

  • Choose a place where a child can be quiet, not a busy or noisy area in the home.

  • Allow the children to choose and arrange the objects for the prayer area. Avoid making it "perfect". Let it evolve.

  • Offer a real Bible (instead of a children's story Bible).

What Child Is This?

The pre-school child delights us with their great capacity for joy. You may try nurturing your child's spiritual life by noticing that joy and giving thanks to God. If you are tempted to grab your phone and capture your child's sweet expression as they blow bubbles, or talk with stuffed animals, or race around the driveway on a scooter, that can be a moment of prayer and thanksgiving! A 3-6 year old is spontaneous, and the joy that they felt in the moment is their spiritual development.
