The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection is a faith community located in the Crestview neighborhood of north-central Austin.

A church inspired by the good news of Jesus Christ, we seek to love and transform our lives and the world around us by celebrating God's image in creation and in all people.

We encourage you to visit, worship with us, participate in any number of our programs and outreach opportunities, and discern whether we could be a place for you to enrich and deepen your spiritual journey. Resurrection welcomes all people, ranging from skeptics to committed believers. Our trust is that when two or three are gathered, Christ is there also! We hope you'll join us on Sunday or for an outreach project and help us share the love of God here in Austin and much farther beyond!

Our History

Back in the 1950’s, the entire city of Austin had a population below 150,000 persons and the area north of 53rd street was primarily pastureland. It was during this time. that a young parishioner, Mr. Carroll von Roeder, of St. David’s Episcopal Church, located downtown, moved into northwest Austin and petitioned the Diocese of Texas to establish a mission in his area. On February 1st, 1953, the Bishop approved the petition for a charter, the mission was a reality, and the name Church of the Resurrection was adopted. In 1984, the name was changed to The Episcopal Church of The Resurrection, to avoid confusion with other denominations.

Services were first held in an open storefront space in the Northwest Shopping Center, then land was purchased on Justin Lane. A prefabricated building was located on the new property and dedicated as the new sanctuary in 1953. In 1955, a second sanctuary was built, which later became the Parish Hall. From 1955 to 1979, the campus grew along with the city. First was the addition of a classroom/nursery, which later became the Sexton’s home, then an education building to house a preschool, and next the church office building. In 1965, the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection was elevated to parish status by the Diocese of Texas and on September 30, 1979, the new church building was dedicated, which is the one you see today.

Celebrating 70+ Years of Sharing God’s Love

HISTORY:

In the 1950’s, the city of Austin had a population below 150,000 and the area north of 53 rd Street was primarily pastureland. On February 1, 1953, a mission charter was approved for a new church, land was purchased on Justin Lane, and in 1965, The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection was elevated to parish status. Over the decades, just like Austin, the church campus grew with the additional of the current sanctuary and several prominent buildings nestled in the heart of the Crestview neighborhood on 3.7 acres of land.

OVERVIEW:

What was once pastureland, became a blue-collar segment of outer Austin, and is now a family-focused destination neighborhood in the city’s central core. ECR currently offers two Sunday services. Holy Eucharist, Rite I at 8:30 am in the intimate Canadian Chapel and Holy Eucharist, Rite II at 10:30 am with music in the nave of the main sanctuary.

MISSION/VISION/VALUES:

The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection is a church inspired by the good news of Jesus Christ. We seek to love and transform our lives and the world around us by celebrating God’s image in creation and in all people. ECR is welcoming of all people from skeptics to committed believers, regardless of age, race, gender, sexuality, or religious background. Our trust is that when two or three are gathered, Christ is there also!

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS:

ECR provides spaces for neighborhood businesses and the church community, as well as serving as the meeting place for several support and educational programs. Additionally, the church has strategic partnerships with local non-profits, such as Street Youth Ministry, Resolution Gardens, Toastmasters, The Boy Scouts, The Launch Pad Job Club, and the Russian Cultural Center.

CURRENT STATE:

The current number of members of the Church is 355 and the average attendance for 2023 was 41. Like many churches across the country, the attendance at ECR has been in a steady decline over the last decade. With the onset of the pandemic, this decline of ~50% has been most notable. The revenue for 2024 is estimated at $274,352 and a budgetary spending at $242,800.

THE VICAR WE SEEK:

The Vicar we seek is the one the Holy Spirit guides to us. We seek a Vicar with the preaching capacity to inspire and connect people to God’s love. We seek a Vicar who is open minded, has a gift for pastoral care, engages people empathetically, and embraces community engagement and outreach. We seek a Vicar who can share our love for our city, neighborhood, diverse cultures, and core value of inclusivity.

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God - Romans 15:7
